USIAA Update

Dear INSEADer,

This is not the place to have another run at the state of our economy or share more gloomy statistics. Instead, I am going to bring you news of other merrier activities. But it would not be fair to our fellow schoolmates if I did not mention up front that, given the present times, anything we can do to make a new introduction for others in our network or help them find a new contact or a new opportunity is absolutely important. Please, if you can facilitate this, let us know, and if you are looking for that contact or introduction please contact Jag Rao and we will help you.

I would also like to add that our support for INSEAD during this time is more important and needed than ever. If you can make a gift to the school this year of any amount, it will be greatly appreciated and will make a difference to scholarships that can be made available and so much more.

Now some happy news. I would like you to join me in congratulating two special people. But before I tell you who they are, let me tell you why they are special. Last year at our volunteers meeting in beautiful San Francisco, the twelve or so of us in attendance decided that we have now enough of an INSEAD population here in the US, and many great success stories both on the business front and within the INSEAD volunteer community, to warrant recognizing every year two outstanding individuals who represent us. So we now have two annual special awards, one for the entrepreneur of the year and one for the volunteer of the year.

This year, we had several finalists for the first award and of course the choice was VERY VERY difficult. And the prize goes to... Mika Salmi from San Francisco (he was not there with us...). Mika is a Finnish-born American entrepreneur and pioneer in new media. His success in establishing one of the world’s first online entertainment companies, Atom Entertainment, and in helping transform MTV Networks into a global leader in new media have earned him widespread recognition as a visionary in his field. CONGRATULATIONS MIKA!

And for the Volunteer of the Year 2008 the prize goes to... who else but Anne Holbach. If you have been involved in the US association, you no doubt have met Anne, the most gracious lady, always ready to listen and give her best to our community. No one else could have claimed the very first volunteer prize than Anne. CONGRATULATIONS ANNE!

On a final note, we are off to a nice season with many events happening in many regions. Please check our website (soon to be moved to INSEAD Connect!). You are still in time to join our skiing weekend in Alta, Utah in mid-March or our golf tournament in May at Bethpage on Long Island.

Stay tuned!

Ciao,

Tommaso, MBA '90D, President USIAA

Lots of interesting happenings in the INSEAD Community - Read On!

As you can see from this information-packed newsletter, the INSEAD alumni community in the US is thriving! We've got skiing and golf on the agenda for the sports-minded, and a hugely successful Club Med vacation highlighted in this edition.

I echo Tommaso's regular appeal for you to become a more active part of our community. There are volunteer positions open at all levels, and events and activities scheduled all around the country. We are searching for presidents for Southern California and for Southeast regions. Within each region, there are volunteer positions. We also know that some of our informal events and get togethers, like the successful random dinners and local drinks have been great successes. Please do consider all these opportunities for yourself.

I'd like to tell you about upcoming changes to our web presence. We are currently looking into a transition to the INSEAD Connect platform to host our website, events, news items and networks. We believe that being part of INSEAD Connect will make it easier for our constituents in the US to connect with INSEAD Alumni globally. It should also facilitate membership administration for both our alumni and our USIAA executive team. Additionally, events that we post on the new platform will be visible to all alumni on the global event calendar. This transition will occur sometime in the Spring as best as we can tell. Fortunately, access to the USIAA portion of INSEAD Connect will be possible using your alumni.insead.edu log in credentials.

I would also like to announce that I am looking for someone to assist or replace me in my current position as head of our communications activities. I've been publishing the newsletter and administering the website for over three years. It's time for some new blood! Let me know if you have any interest in taking over any parts of this function.

I hope you enjoy reading about all that is going on in our community.

In the Tommaso spirit, Ciao,

Bob Stillerman, MBA '77J, Vice President, Communications USIAA

Salamander Golf Cup - May 16th

The second annual INSEAD US Alumni Association Salamander Golf Cup will take place at the Bethpage Red Course in Bethpage State Park, New York, on Saturday May 16, 2009. First tee time is at 11 am.

After narrowly losing out to Andrew Jamison in the 2008 event, our President Tommaso has been working hard to decrease his scoring while increasing his handicap and is confident that some part of this strategy will pay dividends in May.

Golfers of all abilities are invited to play but we have limited space so registration will be on a first come first served basis. To register please pay $130 by clicking here. This covers green fee and golf cart for the round. Questions can be sent here. We look forward to seeing you on May 16th.

Alumni Vacation at Club Med, A First and a Huge Success

Club Med in Ixtapa on the Pacific coast of Mexico was the idyllic venue for the first vacation trip organized by the US Alumni Association. Alumni from both coasts and Vienna, Austria, and their families, 23 in all, including six small children spent seven glorious days in the newly renovated and luxuriously appointed Club Med Ixtapa village. The sun (and unforgettable sunsets), the warm sea, a multitude of sports, entertainment, and non-stop wining and dining made our bonding truly strong.

A testimony to the success of this vacation is that nobody had a single complaint about the facilities or the program. Everyone is asking our association to organize more vacations of this kind. See the Club Med photo gallery on our website for a glimpse of the great time we had.

Faculty Book Tours in February 2009

The MTV Studio in Times Square was the venue for the US Book Launch for Throwing Sheep in the Boardroom How Online Social Networking Will Transform Your Life, Work and World, written by Matthew Fraser and Soumitra Dutta. Thanks to Mika Salmi, MBA '92D, president of Global Digital Media, MTV Networks we were able to host the US book launch at the MTV studios.

Throwing Sheep in the Boardroom

The event was held on February 12 for a group of 50 INSEAD alumni, corporate friends and select members of the media.  Needless to say, production values were high, as the backdrop consisted of floor to ceiling windows that had the continuous movement of video screens over Times Square.  The event was filmed and is available on the website of Throwing Sheep in the Boardroom

This book launch opened with a presentation by Soumitra Dutta, after which there was a discussion moderated by Wilson Cleveland, VP and Director of digital practice at Cubitt Jacobs & Prosek, an international communications firm, with the floor open for questions.  A reception provided by MTV Networks followed, along with more lively discussion.

Soumitra Dutta, dean of External Relations and Roland Berger Chaired Professor of Business and Technology at INSEAD, is internationally renowned for his research in technology and innovation strategy.  He recently presented his ‘Global Information Technology Report’ for the eighth year running at the World Economic Summit in Davos, Switzerland.

Soumitra Dutta and Matthew Fraser will continue to promote this very popular book that touches so many populations regarding social networking.  Future scheduled events to watch for are:

New York City Alumni Luncheon – March 3 at New York Office in Rockefeller Plaza

Boston INSEAD and LBS alumni evening drinks and presentation by Soumitra Dutta, March 5

San Francisco INSEAD and Wharton alumni evening presentation by Matthew Fraser in May

Art Center Sustainable Mobility Summit

INSEAD’s partnership with Art Center is one of the success stories that we are particularly proud of.

Since January 2005 every year students from the Art Center College of Design, Pasadena, California arrive on INSEAD’s Fontainebleau campus to take part in Professor Manuel Sosa's MBA course “Strategic Product and Service Design” (SPSD)SPSD brings together MBA and design students to learn and experience the process of developing new products and services. The emphasis of the course is on integrating and complementing management and design skills throughout all the phases of the development process.  While the design students learn about structured managerial methods, their participation provides INSEAD MBAs with the opportunity to learn from people with strong training and background in industrial design.

The collaboration between MBAs with designers highlights the value of using structured methods for creativity generation and presenting ideas in a holistic way through graphical or physical objects.  The students come away with special problem solving capabilities.

Panel of Four

John Waters, CEO and President, Bright Automotive

Aptera

We have enhanced our partnership with the Art Center  by becoming a sponsor for their third summit ‘Expanding the Vision of Sustainable Mobility’  that took place this February in Pasadena, California.

This international group of influential thinkers, designers, industry executives, government leaders and entrepreneurs gathered from around the world for the third installment  to explore innovative and eco-friendly ideas and strategies for moving goods and people about the planet. The Art Center Summit is a crucial series of dialogues that first began in 2007 with Designing Sustainable Mobility, and was followed in 2008 by Systems, Cities & Sustainable Mobility. This third Summit continued the discussion by focusing on new visions, strategies and success stories from a variety of individuals and organizations striving to improve the broad world of transportation.

The major theme was so timely with the current economic crisis, climate change issues, and energy challenges that are effecting the global world.  The current volatility will require changes in behavior, policy, lifestyle changes and partnerships globally.  There were many innovations, suggested solutions, and research that gave the audience an opportunity to leave with new enthusiasm and the charge to make some movement to improve our current state.

Ricardo Hellmund, MBA '02D alums quotes,  “Thanks to INSEAD’s partnership with the Art Center, I was able to participate in the 2009 Sustainable Summit.  The summit provided me with information on how our civilization is damaging our plant, but more importantly the summit gave me a view on what academics, scientists, politicians, futurists, and business people are doing to make our world sustainable and slow our damage to the planet.”

Next year we plan to take a more active role in the 4th and last summit – that will hopefully have several of our faculty from the Social Innovation center and alums that are active in this space as speakers.

Career Services News

Wanted… Jobs, Jobs, Jobs

This constant cry heard everywhere these days has become worse in the last three months. Now more than ever in these truly trying times of global recession, jobs are desperately needed, even by our star alumni, not just in financial services, but in every industry and economic sector.

How can we help?

Alumni, reach out and help each other. Do you have any openings in your organization, For-profit or Non-profit where our alumni might fit in? Do you know of anyone hiring elsewhere? Do you know of any openings coming up in the new year? Let other alumni know by posting those opportunities on our Web, either directly or by e-mail to me.

Chapter Presidents – please appoint career services persons for your regions so that there is someone to focus on this important issue and to help unemployed alumni in the region.

Chapters – please organize periodic career-networking events, with or without outside speakers or panelists. These events can not only facilitate exchange of ideas, provide leads, guidance and counsel, but also act as morale boosters.

INSEAD’s newly launched CareerLink (see below) is a vast improvement over job search tools previously available to us and should alleviate the pain in the search process. Fellow alumni, if you are not already members of our national association, please join now for only $75 a year, so that you are eligible to access CareerLink.

Job Search Made Easier On InseadUSA Web Site

We are currently exploring the migration from our InseadUSA Web site to the worldwide INSEAD Connect and its associated CareerLink with its targeted jobs board and elite CV bank plus online career development tools. This exercise and the conversion will take a few more months. In the meantime, we have made it easier for you to navigate the jobs database in our current web site. The latest jobs available can be accessed by clicking the Careers tab on the home page.  Since space is limited there, other recent job postings can be accessed either by clicking For additional listings go to the Job Postings page or by clicking Job Postings and Jobs- 2 on the primary menu.

Job Listings from AAGEF – A New Resource

We are pleased to announce our reciprocity agreement with Association des Amis des Grandes Ecoles de France (AAGEF) which has enabled us to share open positions with a larger pool. In other words, AAGEF advises us of new openings in their database and we provide them with ours. This has appreciably expanded the size of the job listing and therefore the opportunities available to our alumni.

INSEAD CareerLink, A Rich and Readily Accessible Resource for Career Move

Many of you have by now seen the October 28 announcement of the launch of INSEAD's CareerLink. CareerLink represents a new generation in career market database with its job bank and our CV pool, which efficiently brings together job seekers and job providers, including headhunters. It is the result of years of effort by INSEAD and the International Alumni Association in gathering user requirements, planning, developing, testing and now the execution of enhanced career search tools that many of us have been asking for. Its timing is most opportune in the current worldwide economic climate -- sub-prime mortgages, financial meltdown, credit crunch, recession, and consequent unemployment and high job demand. Let us try to make the best use of it whether we are searching for employment as a new graduate, looking for a career change, or seeking INSEAD alumni to hire for our organizations.

Since access to CareerLink is available only to members of national INSEAD alumni associations, we hope this will prompt our alumni who are not currently members to join the U.S. alumni association or, in the case of discontinued membership, to rejoin.

We would appreciate your feedback on CareerLink's usefulness, usability, ease of use, and areas for improvement.

Regional News

Northern California and Northwest region, Rich Pulliam, MBA '04D, co-President

The Bay Area Alumni Group just kicked off what promises to be a spectacular 2009 for our alumni.  Yes times are bad in capital markets, but all the more reason to use our network to help keep ourselves ahead of the curve!

Holiday party a great success!

We had our kickoff event in January with a Holiday Party at Bubble Lounge organized by Ed Chow and Song Bac Toh, that was tremendous!  We had a fantastic turnout for this event, with great wine and champagne alongside delicious appetizers.  We literally packed in the entire back room with over 75 alumni and partners, and good times were had by all.

Song Bac Toh named co-President, Northern California and Northwest Region

Song Bac Toh has joined our Bay Area Alumni Association as Co-President with Richard Pulliam.  So WELCOME SONG!  He has been a tremendous asset to the alumni organization in Seattle and now in the Bay Area, and we are very excited to have him join up in this leadership role.

Facebook/Twitter

We have created a Facebook Group and a Twitter Account for our local alumni network.  The Facebook Group is called INSEAD Bay Area Alumni, and is controlled to ensure we only have INSEAD people join it - so join up!  We will publish our events to that group, so you have even more ways to follow what is going on and to tell us what you want to see next!  And if you Tweet (the verb to post a note in Twitter), make sure to FOLLOW our local Twitter Account (username: INSEADBayArea) to be kept up to date via email and SMS alerts to new stuff going on.  And if you have no idea what a tweet is and don't care to know, don't worry - you are certainly not alone and though we live in the heart of the technology universe, no one will force you to do it...you can still get your email alerts and go to the website to see new info.

Recent Events

That event inspired alumni Elena Kohl and Joe Waltman to reminisce about Random Dinners past, and then to volunteer to organize a regional Random Dinner event on Friday, February 20!  Thanks Elena and Joe!!!

Tuesday, February 17 we began our monthly Wine Tasting events at Nectar Wine Lounge in San Francisco with a delicious tasting of Slovenian and Croatian wines combined with a wonderful blind tasting of a Burgundy.  These wine events will take place The FIRST TUESDAY (in honor of another alum's concept from years back) of each month.  Come join us - same place, same time, different wines where the winery itself will be there to describe the wines and the Wine Director will walk us through at least one blind taste each time.

Thursday, February 26 we brought the social events BACK to the Valley, and are beginning our first of what will be regular Happy Hour events in Palo Alto. No longer will it be San Francisco-only social events!  If you're in the Valley, keep your ears open.

Upcoming Events

Wine Tasting Events (I'm going to pick the best wine tasting date of each month, and will send email alerts about it once the winery is known a few weeks in advance):

  • Tuesday, March 24th, 7pm until 9pm at Nectar Wine Lounge; 3330 Steiner Street, San Francisco, CA - Siduri Wines - a fantastic ultra premium single vineyard Pinot Noir producer; Robert M Parker Jr. calls this one of his favorite wineries - a must taste event!  We will sample 4 different wines from Siduri, and I'm sure we will throw in another blind tasting as well!
  • One Tuesday in April and one Tuesday in May, info TBD; if there is interest in having some of these in Burlingame, please send a note to Rich Pulliam.

Happy Hours (last Thursday of each month, alternating between San Francisco and Palo Alto) from 6pm until 8pm:

  • Thursday, March 26 - Bubble Lounge, San Francisco
  • Thursday, April 30 - Mantra Lounge, Palo Alto
  • Thursday May 28 - Bubble Lounge, San Francisco
IMPORTANT Event: INSEAD Alumni and Student Networking Cocktail

Description: Meet and share insights and knowledge and networking with INSEAD students taking the Silicon Valley course with Dominique Trempont!  It would be TREMENDOUSLY valuable to our students to engage with our alumni in VC, technology companies, start-ups, clean tech or just for general networking.  Please come support your school and enjoy the free cocktails and network with each other!!!

Location: Garden Court Hotel, 520 Cowper Street, Palo Alto, CA - look for the INSEAD event signs

Date/Time: Tuesday, April 28th from 6pm to 8pm

Lastly we are organizing speaker conferences on Innovation, Clean Tech and Social Entrepreneurship, so STAY TUNED in the coming months!!!

New England Chapter Celebrates Annual Holiday Party

On January 9th, 2009, the New England chapter celebrated its annual holiday party at Mary Ann O'Loughlin's home in Brookline, Massachusetts.

In keeping with the hard economic times, the NE chapter experimented with a new holiday party format: free admission.  Rather than charging a ticket price, chapter President Christian Mazzi and VPs Aleks Bozic and David Martin decided to cut costs by having the party at alumni Mary Ann O'Loughlin's home and use a professional caterer rather than booking a pricey restaurant.  Further cost savings were realized in the alcohol category by asking alumni attending the party to bring their own bottles of wine, a task they happily obliged to do!

The experiment was a success—we had roughly 30 attendees (slightly more than last year) and the chapter used roughly the same subsidy as in previous years.  Furthermore, alumni were very positive about the new “relaxed” format—perhaps reminding them of the many chateau parties they had attended back at Fontainebleau!
