Dear INSEADers,
With Thanksgiving behind us and the winter holiday season approaching fast, there is lots to update you on.
First, I am happy to announce that many new alumni have taken the step to join our association and many activities are being planned. It is natural in an association such as ours that the more people who get involved, the better the activities and benefits to us all. So I am reaching out to all who are not currently members to encourage you to join the association. We have a lot we want to do and we need your active participation. Please log on to our website for all sorts of updates as well as for contact information in your geographical regions.
I am also pleased to welcome Seth Hidek, EMBA '05D, who has joined our association volunteer team as the President of the Tri-State chapter.
Someone recently asked me if it is possible to be part of an interest group that would bring together classmates from a single or several promotions. Of course it is! All you need do is reach out to others from your promotion and create it. Or perhaps join with other promotions to create activities that will be of mutual interest. We encourage alumni to form interest groups of any kind and and reach out to others; it makes the experience of being part of our alumni association even more fun!
In that regard, I would like to thank you for responding to our survey several weeks ago. We learned many things and will be applying your suggestions in each region. New events will be shaped around what you voted to be the most important. Check our website and event calendar in the months ahead for events in your region.
On the national front we are planning a party to be held in NYC in January to announce and celebrate the recipients of Volunteer of the Year (the Anne Holbach Award) and Entrepreneur of the Year for 2009. We hope you will join us for this festive occasion to toast the winners, or check their names on the website following the party.
Our annual 2010 USIAA Salamander Ski Cup weekend will follow on March 5-7, 2010 (see the announcement below). Be the next to win the Salamander Race and have your name engraved on the cup! As is now the INSEAD tradition, the event will be held in beautiful Alta, Utah. Last year, the skiing was fantastic. It will be another great opportunity to reunite with old alumni friends, make new friends, do a little networking, a lot of skiing and most of all have great fun. We encourage you to bring your friends and family -- we have race categories for every level. No experience or expertise necessary!
Finally, in April/May we will have our annual gathering of active volunteers and will this year celebrate the 50th anniversary of our school.
INSEAD’s 50th anniversary makes this a good time to reflect on all that we, as alumni, have gained from our INSEAD experience – not only the education we received and confidence to know that we can be comfortable anywhere in the world, no matter how challenging or unfamiliar the environment, but the professional opportunities the INSEAD credential has afforded us, then and now, and, as important, the friends made and large community of which we are all a part. A group of us have concluded that as alumni here in the U.S., we can do more to invest in INSEAD’s continued excellence and reputation (see announcement elsewhere in this newsletter from Angelo Abdela, MBA ’68J, our new Alumni Fund trustee for the U.S.). If you have not already made a gift to support the 2009-2010 Alumni Fund drive, I encourage you to do so. Your participation and generosity in doing what you can will make an important difference in what our school is able to accomplish this year. And, it is easy to do. Just visit www.giveto.insead.edu, or you can contact Kacey Foster, INSEAD’s Director of Development for North America, at 646.254.6915.
Lastly, I would like to share with you the results of the Financial Times (FT) European Business School ranking, published today, Monday, 7 December 2009. Thanks to having placed well in the FT’s rankings for MBA, Executive Education, and EMBA programs, INSEAD is ranked number 3 among 70 European schools.
The top-ten schools in the ranking are:
- HEC
- London Business School
- INSEAD
- IMD
- IE Business School
- IESE Business School
- Rotterdam School of Management
- EM Lyon (shared with Esade)
- Esade Business School
- Vlerick Leuven Gent Management School
The complete ranking is available here.
I look forward to your participation in our association this year and to seeing you in the months ahead some of the many fun and educational events being planned.
I wish all of you and your families the best for a great winter holiday season.
Tommaso, MBA '90D, President USIAA

News from the INSEAD Alumni Fund (IAF)
Hello Friends!
I am pleased to have been elected as the IAF Trustee for the U.S. earlier this fall, taking over for Sharyanne McSwain, MBA ‘91J, who worked hard and successfully to keep the fund active in the U.S. these past six years. For those of you who don’t know me, I am a MBA ‘68J graduate and had a lengthy career in financial management – Vice President at BestFoods and Managing Director at Citibank. I am now involved in “angel” investments, but most of all I am very excited by the prospect of helping our Alma Mater.
As INSEAD is celebrating its 50th anniversary this year, it seems a perfect time to try to do more. I have asked Caroline van Scheltinga, MBA ‘88J (Managing Director – Investment Banking, Jefferies & Co.) and Tom Adams, MBA ‘01J (CEO, Rosetta Stone Inc.) to co-chair with me a committee that will spearhead a fundraising effort among U.S. alumni, and they enthusiastically agreed to help. We believe that all of INSEAD’s alumni should contribute regularly to the Alumni Fund not only as a measure of appreciation for what we learned and experienced at INSEAD and for the boost it gave to our careers, but also as an investment in the increasing value of our degree. As INSEAD grows, we grow....As INSEAD prospers, we prosper! A direct appeal will follow, but if you are inclined to jump in now with your support, please go to: www.giveto.insead.edu. If you have any questions or would like to help us with this endeavor, please email me.
Angelo S. Abdela, MBA'68J

New Leadership for INSEAD's U.S. West Coast Council
INSEAD has appointed Michael Darnaud, business development consultant and INSEAD MBA '84J, as president of the U.S. West Coast Council.
As background, INSEAD's National Councils (originally called Advisory Boards) and the umbrella International Council of which they are a part, were established beginning in the 1970s as a complement to the INSEAD Alumni Association and means by which INSEAD could have a dialogue with top business executives across multiple geographies. Today there are National Councils in 23 geographies worldwide. Their mission: to engage in activity that builds INSEAD's brand and reputation for thought leadership and develops interest in and support for INSEAD's core programs and activities, and to provide and help raise funds to make core activity possible.
The U.S. Council was formed in 1976 and is today chaired by Roberto Buaron, chairman and CEO of First Atlantic Capital and INSEAD MBA '70J. Based in New York, members are drawn from across the country when possible. In 2002, INSEAD formed the U.S. West Coast Council to extend its reach further in the U.S. The group was led by Eric Benhamou, chairman of the Silicon Valley-based Benhamou Global Ventures, until the summer of 2008 when Mr. Benhamou stepped down.
Darnaud, who has served as acting president of the U.S. West Coast Council in the past year, plans to work with current West Coast Council members, many of whom are INSEAD alumni, to reshape activities and to collaborate more closely with West Coast chapters of the USA Alumni Association to help build INSEAD's presence in the region and develop support for INSEAD's core programs, activities, and needs.

Anders Bialek, MBA, '06J, Co-President, New England Region
On October 7th, a dozen alumni were joined by Jake Cohen, current MBA Program Dean, for cocktails in Harvard Square. Jake discussed his strategic initiatives for the institution including introducing a new MBA / MPA joint-degree program through partnering with another school. He also fielded questions from alums who, as always, made them challenging and engaging. In all it was a wonderful evening, and we hope to see Jake back in Boston soon.
Additionally, the First Tuesday Cross-MBA drinks continue to be held on the first Tuesday of every month at the Intercontinental Hotel on Boston’s waterfront. It is a wonderful atmosphere with consistent participation from over 50 MBAs from various Top 20 programs. Please contact Anders Bialek if you are interested in learning more.

Seth Hidek, EMBA '05D, President, TriState
Merry Christmas, Happy Hanukah, Happy Holidays to everyone.
Warm wishes this holiday season to you and your families. It is has been refreshing to watch the lights come up, the tree in Rockefeller Center light up, having our first snowfall a few days back, starting to head to holiday parties, and watching the Holiday Season light up our wonderful ‘little town’. Besides perhaps the wonderful traditions of the holiday season in Germany, New York is my favorite place to spend this time of year.
With the holidays passing, as life slows down a bit and we make plans to travel to see family as many of us are, I am reminded me of how for so many alumni New York can be a transitory experience. Its common to come here for career growth, to meet other interesting, as it is an amazingly fast paced global city. It is a fast city - busy schedules, fast markets, fast thinking – even the people walk fast here!
Yet sometimes in the race in such a fast city, interesting people, and fulfilling careers we start to think too much in terms of being a consumer of the city – ‘what am I getting out of it’ – instead of ‘what am I adding to it’. Sometimes this speed and transience creates an impetus not to invest as much in time and effort, as we know that we may be leaving. In contrast though, I was recently talking with a friend how the more you add to your life and the relationships around you, the richer life becomes. Investing in the here and now, no matter how long you may be here.
So this holiday season, my holiday message is about getting involved and adding to your life. With family, with a circle of good friends, with a charity, or with a church, mosque or temple. Whatever is your way to get involved in your community, do something good. Something that adds richness to your existence. And one of those ways is with INSEAD.
We have people stepping forward to put together wonderful events for us. Not just being a consumer, but adding to the life of the alumni community:
- Renita Kalhorn recently hosted a sold out event on Careers on December 7th, “The Biggest Career & Job Search Mistakes Smart People Make”.
- Pooja Sethi is hosting Monthly Cocktails at Pranna, Monday, December 14, 2009, 6:30 PM to 9:30 PM
- Sara Agrawal is planning an event tentatively entitled 'The Role of US Business in Shaping Foreign Policy' with Parag Khanna, author of the international best seller The Second World: Empires and Influence in the New Global Order and current host of MTV's Innerview. This event will likely also host key members of our alumni community as panelists. If interested in being a panelist, contact myself of Sara.
Please be on the lookout for the INSEAD Alumni Association Holiday Party, to be held in the first two weeks of January. Details will follow. We would like even more committee involvement from our alumni. Please drop me a note if you would like to get involved. We have a few people interested in helping out on the committee but no designated Chair at his time. Involvement can be from something as large as volunteering to be the Chairperson, sponsorship, gift bag donations, or silent auction items. Or something smaller but needed and significant, such as helping with decorations and set up, or joining the committee to invite your friends and spread the word.
As a last note, I was recently tentatively asked “If I want to do an event, is it Ok to profile or accentuate my business in the event I am doing?” My answer is a affirming, responding, “Yes!” We do our events as interesting events, but also they are forums to increase our business network, one of the reasons we went to INSEAD. We are happy to have a business as a sponsor, do an event with an interest of yours, or to further your career.
Lastly, with all of the talk of involvement with a hint of altruism over the holiday season, I would like someone to think of project managing an event for the INSEAD Alumni Association that adds some good to the city. A drive for a charity, or perhaps even cleaning up a park this spring? Someone out here has a great idea for others to rally behind. I will support it, and your project management position is waiting. All it takes is one e-mail to me to take the idea of yours and move it into action.
All the best this Holiday Season.Return to “In this Issue”
