USIAA Update

Dear Alumni,

Greetings! We are well into the winter and I can think of nothing more appropriate than to take advantage of the season in a fun and adventuresome way. We are holding our first nationwide ski event, over the weekend of 28 March, in Alta, Utah. We have a great venue and some wonderful events planned, including competition for the Salamander Cup! I will be there and hope you can as well. Of course, your families are invited!

In June we are planning a golfing event on Long Island, NY. More details will be available shortly, but do save the date of 21 June.

I also wish to ask your help on the jobs front. Strategic to the healthy growth of USIAA is the provision of outstanding career services for alumni who aspire to higher and more satisfying job positions. You can help your fellow alumni in their career ambitions by offering job opportunities on our Web site and in our newsletters. It's free advertising for your company. If you are in a position to hire experienced INSEAD graduates or are aware of such opportunities, please bring them to the attention of our Career Services VP, Jag Rao.

As always, I'd love to hear from you regarding your thoughts and ideas for our association. Contact information for all our alumni leaders appears in the contacts section of this newsletter below.

Ciao,

Tommaso Trionfi, MBA '90, President USIAA

Dear Alumni,

The 'get in touch' campaign to reach out to the more than 2000 INSEAD alumni in the US is about to begin. We want to make sure we have up-to-date contact information for each and every alumnus/a living or working in the US. We hope to engage people from each of our 10 regions, and alums from each promotion to be able to contact every one on our list. If you are interested in helping out with that activity, either for your region or your promotion, please let us know. If you know of someone in our community who is not in touch with us, feel free to forward us that information.

Thanks for your help!

Regards,

Bob Stillerman, MBA '77, VP Communications

Former Director of INSEAD's Career Management Services is organizing a "Reunion with a Mission"

Dear US Alumni,

It’s already been 3 years since I left INSEAD after my 16 years as the Director of CMS.  And you thought you had seen the last of me!   I’m about to launch my newest project and hope it will be a way to reconnect with many of you!

Since April 2005, I’ve been busy growing my business, spending half of my time in Europe and the other half here in the US, based in St Paul, Minnesota.  I’ve been working with various business schools, offering professional training for career professionals, teaching EMBA programs and offering special cross-cultural workshops for international MBA students.

In July 2008 my company will be offering the first in a series of Executive Retreats – aimed at mid career MBA alumni who are looking for some ‘time out’ to reflect on the direction of their career.  It will be held in Lake Geneva, Wisconsin in a beautiful setting, conducive to reflection and decision-making.

For this first weekend, we’re working with the MBA alumni groups from INSEAD, Kellogg and GSB in Chicago.  And because I would like to attract as many INSEAD alumni (!) as possible, we would like to offer you a 10% discount on registration for the weekend.  Hopefully we’ll have enough INSEADs to make it an INSEAD reunion!

For more information and to register, please see my website. Please let me hear from you via email – and I hope you’ll think about joining us in Wisconsin in July!

Mary Boss, former Director of INSEAD MBA Career Management Service

USIAA contributes to Earth Institute

Dear Ms. Zaininger,

Thank you for your gifts on behalf on the US Insead Alumni Association to the Earth Institute's Millennium Villages Project on December 31,2007. Your contribution supports this unique project to use science-based practical interventions to put rural Africa on the path towards sustainable development and achieving the Millennium Development Goals. As food security is vital, agricultural intervention is first and foremost, upon which all other interventions stand. Here are just a few highlights from the Millennium Villages over the last year:

  • With the food source now stabilized in the village of Mwandama, Malawi, the Earth Institute will turn its focus to investing in health services, schools, and better communication with the outside world.
  • With an illiteracy rate as high as 70% and little tradition of sending children to school, the nomadic village of Dertu, Kenya plans to address the challenges of keeping children in school by building classrooms and dormitories where students and teachers can reside while family members move the herds. This intervention will allow students (particularly girls) to complete their primary education.
  • After two years as a Millennium Village, Sauri, Kenya villagers are starting to grow cash crops and developing business enterprises. Earth Institute teams are liaising with business and government leaders in Kisumu, the nearest city for market purposes, to build support for the new resources villagers will bring to market.

These are just a few examples of the growing evidence that the Millennium Villages concept works. With increased investment in low-cost interventions in farming, health, education and access to markets, we can help entire villages move up the ladder of development. Your support is helping us to make this possible! Please do not hesitate to contact me if I can provide further information and thank you again for your support.

The Alumni Sustainability Roundtable of North America

Not all INSEAD Alumni are all business all of the time. Many alums are increasingly interested and concerned about wider issues affecting society and the planet and are working on ways to use the power of business to provide sustainable solutions for global issues.

A number of alumni, with the prompting of Dean Brown and the Alumni Sustainability Roundtable, have formed a Steering Committee to recommend a framework for an Alumni Sustainability Roundtable in North America. The original Alumni Sustainability Roundtable (link: was formed by alums over 4 years ago and has held 18 meetings each focusing on a different topic related to sustainability and business. Topics have included Carbon Trading, Microfinance, the Role of Business in Humanitarian Operations, working with NGO’s, Pollution, and Social Entrepreneurship, among others.  The purpose of the new Steering Committee is to create a North American regional Roundtable which will serve the local alumni population. If you are interested in supporting these efforts, joining the Steering Committee, or are generally interested in becoming a participant in the Roundtable, or would just like to say it's a great idea, please contact Kiku Loomis

Information on the Roundtable can be found on the INSEAD website:  Alumni Sustainability Roundtable.

INSEAD Alumni Fund is looking for US Volunteers

There are many ways for you to “give back” to INSEAD, that do not involve sending a check or credit card number.  The IAF is looking for volunteers in every region throughout the US to help with fundraising efforts.  If you miss your old Robin Hood adventures or have some ideas for creative fundraising, please contact Sharyanne McSwain for more information on how you can help.

2008 – Change You Can Believe In!

The current fundraising campaign will soon be coming to a close and INSEAD is currently considering making major changes to the way it does fundraising in the US.  We would love to have your input.  Send your suggestions on fundraising efforts, events, methods to Sharyanne McSwain and that will be transmitted to the Development Team.

Reunions will soon be here

Promotions from ‘68, ‘78, ’88, ’93 ’98 and 2003 your reunion year is finally here!  Please give generously to your Reunion Class Gift and make the event very special.

If you belong to any enterprise that frequently or occasionally hires MBA’s, you may be willing to talk about your organization to our recent graduates aspiring to a career in the U.S. They would be interested in learning about your organization, its policies, practices, opportunities, etc. The dialog could be by phone or by e-mail, or even face-to-face, if it can be arranged. The Winter Ball in December 2007 at The River Club in Manhattan was a smashing success. We had over 130 alumni and guests in attendance and boy, did we have a good time! Great food, great views, wonderful band, fabulous dancing and incredible auction prizes. Thank you to all our generous sponsors for the auction items and goody bags – they were truly incredible!

Non of this would have been possible without the tireless dedication of our wonderful Winter Ball committee led by Wenke Thoman Sterns and Raj Singh. Thank you all so much.
