In This Issue - September 2008
Hello INSEADers,
Welcome back to school! After a nice summer season we have a great team getting back together to start organizing many exciting events for the next several months. We are working on many local regional activities and also some national gatherings such as the Winter Ball sometime in January 2009 in NYC and the second Salamander Ski cup in Alta Utah in March 2009. We have a full team organizing these events but there is still room for you to join us and have fun with putting together these activities and/or suggest new ones for our community. Please visit our USA alumni website to keep uptodate on all our events.
There will be a meeting of the IAA presidents in Bergamo Italy in October, wehre we are going to discuss how we can as an international organization share best practices and ideas to make the INSEAD network even stronger. If you have ideas that you want to share please do not hesitate to contact me to discuss.
I hope to see many of you at our events.
Tommaso, MBA '90D, President USIAA

There are many ways for you to “give back” to INSEAD, that do not involve sending a check or credit card number. The IAF is looking for volunteers in every region throughout the US to help with fundraising efforts. INSEAD Professor Jean-Claude Larreche's book tourWell known INSEAD Professor and perennial favorite of the alumni community Jean-Claude Larreche is planning a couple of fall 2008 trips to the USA to promote his book, "The Momentum Effect: How to Ignite Exceptional Growth".
His whirlwind tour will see him visit four cities in the US, and two in Canada. This provides a great opportunity for alumni to re-connect with some of the leading edge work being done at INSEAD, and to meet 'J.C.' again to reminisce about Markstrat!
Here are the dates for your diary - The events will typically include a presentation, Q&A session and a cocktail, so definitely worth attending
- October 1 Silicon Valley
- November 18 Chicago
- November 19 Boston
- November 20 NYC
- November 24 Montreal
- November 26 Toronto
If you want to help organize events in your area, please contact your regional head - the more the merrier.
J.C. Larreche is Professor at INSEAD, where he holds the Alfred H. Heineken Chair. It was as a student at Stanford that he was first nicknamed "J.C." by his friends. It was also there, in the midst of Silicon Valley, that he developed an interest in the way some firms achieve exceptional growth while others don't. Since then, his research, teaching, and consulting activities have focused on the discovery of systematic and practical ways to help businesses achieve quality growth that is not only exceptional but also sustainable.

INSEAD Alumni invited to participate in Wharton Aerospace 2009
What is Wharton Aerospace?
Wharton Aerospace is an affinity group of top-tier business school alumni (Wharton, Harvard, Kellogg, University of Chicago, Sloan/MIT and INSEAD) and invited guests with shared ties and commitments to the aerospace & defense industries. We conduct by-invitation-only annual get-togethers on Wharton campus in Philadelphia to foster professional and social connections among our members.
Our 2008 event keynote speakers were ITT Corporation CEO Steve Loranger and former Under Secretary of Defense for Acquisitions Technology & Logistics Kenneth Krieg.1 This event was attended by 170 participants and over one dozen speakers and panelists from over 90 companies. Our 50% of participants were corporate VPs and above; 15% were CEOs/CFOs/COOs/CxOs. We expect a similar profile for our 2009 event. Our sixth annual event will take place in Huntsman Hall on Friday 06 February 2009 (with our traditional night-before cocktail reception at the Inn@Penn) and we expect it to be as interesting and well-attended as our previous events. Our confirmed keynote speakers are:
- Wes Bush, President and Chief Operating Officer, Northrop Grumman Corporation
- Howard Lance, President and Chief Executive Officer, Harris Corporation
We will have two concurrent panels, one on “civil aviation” and one on “defense industry corporate strategy – does it really matter?” panel. Our civil aviation panel is our recurring look at current issues and challenges facing the industry. Our defense industry panel will take a provocative look at what it means to plan and execute strategy given certain unique characteristics of the industry. Additionally, we will have break-out sessions for self-selecting “communities of practice” based on specific future input from all registered participants. Registration is now open, and details may be found at our registration page.

Alumni Vacation Club at Club Med - Your response due by Friday, Sept. 19
Our recent survey shows considerable interest in forming an alumni vacation club. In response, we formed a committee comprising Judith Harley from Washington DC region, Janey Heller from Bay Area, Veronica Wong from New York, Sameer Agrawal from Pennsylvania and myself. We have looked at Club Med's offers for various villages, start dates and durations and decided to pursue Ixtapa Pacific in Mexico for a 6-day vacation starting February 1, 2009.
We chose Ixtapa because Club Med is offering us a very special promotional group deal of $666 per person for six nights, including all meals, drinks, entertainment, sports and other recreational activities. For sports and activities available, see their website.
We also chose Ixtapa because it has award-winning children's clubs, from infants to teenagers in five age categories. The club has recently been totally renovated at a cost of $20 million. This price of $111 per night is typically less than half of what Club Med charges per night in other villages and at other times.
Following are the specifics of Cub Med offer:
Village: Ixtapa Pacific, Mexico
Group name: Mr. Rao Group
Date of arrival: Feb 1, 2009 for 6 nights only
FEB 1, 2009 - 6 nights minimum/maximum - SPECIAL PROMOTION
Now we need to decide by Sept. 19 if we will accept the offer which means if we are willing to commit to forming a group of 20 or more (say 10 rooms) and making the advance payment as per the terms above. This is an offer hard to refuse and we will lose it if we do not decide now. Even if rooms are available after this deadline, the prices are bound to go up. Please therefore, e-mail me by early next week if you are willing and able to join our first ever vacation club experience.

INSEAD Alumni invited to The CEO Connection
The CEO Connection is an invitation-only organization that promotes ongoing peer-to-peer interaction among leaders in companies with annual sales from $500 million to $5 billion. Membership includes seasoned executives, as well as rising and newly minted leaders.
Outside experts can offer valuable guidance — but from a limited perspective. Board members are bound by Sarbanes- Oxley to act as watchdogs, not sounding boards. Employees have other agendas. Only other CEOs understand your situation from your position — because they share the same point of view. The CEO Connection offers the unique opportunity to plug into an elite network of today’s top corporate talent through regularly scheduled events and a wide range of virtual resources.
Inspired by C-level Wharton executives seeking peer-level interaction, The CEO Connection evolved from the successful CEO Boot Camp series, where up to 12 hand-picked CEOs engage in a full day of closed-door, interactive sessions. Attendees wanted to continue the relationships forged during the dynamic Boot Camp experience. In response, we created The CEO Connection.
For more information go the The CEO Connection website.

Summer in the Tri-State region
It was not a completely lazy summer in the Tri-State area. We had a wonderful Bastille Day party this year. Many thanks to our host Mary Lee Rieley for obtaining the spectacular rooftop venue. We took to the Rooftop at 230 Fifth one last time this year for the event. Other recent arrivals I missed, please make drop me a line to make sure you’re included in future announcements.
