USIAA Update

Dear INSEADers,

Summer seems to be going fast now with Labor Day weekend and what seems to be a very busy September already at hand.  Despite the summer lull, a lot has happened with our Association since our last newsletter.  In July, we again had a great Bastille Day celebration in NYC that was very well attended and superbly organized by Carol Fedida and Mary Lee Rieley. We have also been busy interviewing several very strong candidates for various positions within the Association.  I am happy to announce that we have a few new faces who will be helping to lead our activities, with more news to come in several regions. That said, we are still looking for additional volunteers to help launch new activities or take over some existing openings; in particular, I would like to extend the call to the newer promotions for them to be involved and make
sure we keep fresh ideas in the pipeline.

I would like to welcome to our Association the following new volunteers:  Caroline Kaufmann, as Regional President for the Midwest; Anders Bialek, new Regional Co-President for New England (with David Martin), Stephanie Lim as Vice President Membership and Marketing, and Alfredo Angel, Vice President, Entrepreneurship.

Anders Bialek, MBA '06J, joined the USIAA leadership team this past July and serves as co-President, alongside David Martin, of the New England alumni association.  Currently, Anders works in Strategy & Business Development at iRobot, which he recently joined after moving back from Stockholm, Sweden, where he was a consultant with McKinsey & Company.  He holds a BA from Hobart & William Smith Colleges and, prior to pursuing his MBA from INSEAD, launched a software company in Boston.  In his free time, he enjoys telemark skiing, golfing and fishing.  Anders lives with his wife, Hilary, and their son, Thayer, just outside of Boston.

I would also like to acknowledge Jag Rao, our dedicated Careers Services VP, who is leaving this post. I know I represent the entire executive team and the alumni association in thanking Jag for his work in scoping out jobs, arranging national events such as the Club Med alumni vacation and in being a strong supporter of our association for so many years. Thanks, Jag! The good news is that Jag is not leaving the team, however, but moving into a new role as senior advisor to the USIAA Executive Team. We also welcome Siv Gollakota, formerly President of our Southeast region, to replace Jag as Vice President of Career Services.

We now also have a new USA Alumni Association website that is linked to INSEAD Connect with all the other National Alumni Association websites. Please go to www.inseadusa.com to see it for yourself, and of course do not hesitate to give us feedback to improve the site.

In other news, INSEAD has just released the 2008 employment statistics. Despite challenging market conditions in 2008, 85% of MBA graduates found employment within three months of leaving INSEAD (94% of the J'08 class and 77% of the D'08 class). Building on the school’s international brand, they went to work at  over 300 companies and in 56 countries.  Indeed, INSEAD's international reach is wider than ever before.  In 2008, 12% of graduates accepted jobs in the Near /Middle East and Africa – twice as many as in the previous year for those regions. And, thanks to INSEAD's strong presence in Asia, 22% of our MBAs took up opportunities in Asia Pacific.

Like many educational institutions, INSEAD has faced its own set of economic challenges in the last 12 months. September marks the start of a new academic term and INSEAD's 50th Anniversary year, during which time I think the world will gain a greater appreciation of the unique attributes that make INSEAD a global leader in business education (see the update on INSEAD's 50th Anniversary and Global Adverstising Campaign elsewhere in this newsletter).  I know we all share a pride in our school and a belief that what we experienced there changed our lives, so I hope you will join me in making a gift to the Alumni Fund this fall to help INSEAD begin this milestone year in as strong a financial position as possible.  Just visit www.giveto.insead.edu, or you can contact Kacey Foster, INSEAD’s director of development for North America, at 646.254.6915.

To help celebrate the 50th Anniversary and continue to provide great networking, social, and educational opportunities for all our members, we are planning many new events in different parts of the country throughout the year as well as our national party in NYC. So come and join in the fun by participating and helping to organize activities in your area, and make sure you check our website for updates.
I look forward to your participation in the USA Alumni Association this year, and wish you all and your families the best for a great fall season.

Ciao,

Tommaso, MBA '90D, President USIAA

USIAA Website Is Now Hosted with INSEAD Connect

As we mentioned in our last newsletter (June 09) we were about to migrate our website to the INSEAD Connect platform. That transition was successfully completed at the end of July. We now benefit from a single sign on (using your lifelong INSEAD log in credentials) that we hope will make access to those portions of the website that require log in easier to navigate. If you do experience log in problems, there is a link at alumni.insead.edu that you can use to receive your credentials via email.

You can still access the USIAA site via www.inseadusa.com.

By migrating to the new site we are now integrated into the world-wide event calendar. Events in a region will appear in that region's calendar, in the US calendar and in the global calendar.

I look forward to hearing your comments about the new site.

Regards,

Bob Stillerman, MBA '77J, Vice President, Communications USIAA

INSEAD 50th Anniversary Update

Global Advertising Campaign - From Dean Frank Brown

This month, concurrent with the start of INSEAD's yearlong 50th Anniversary celebration, INSEAD will be launching a new global advertising campaign (both print and online) to raise awareness of the school and its differentiating attributes and to solidify its positioning as 'The Business School for the World.'  The strategy for this campaign has been developed over recent months through a process that has included tests of both media choices and messaging with groups of faculty, staff, current MBA participants, and alumni. A recurring and forceful message - 'Understand the World. Expand your World' - will link the various threads of the campaign.

The initial phase of the campaign will run from September through December 2009, during which time ads will be placed in media across all of INSEAD's major markets, including the U.S.  On Monday, September 7, a teaser ad appeared in The Financial Times, and the first official ads of the campaign will begin running on September 14 in publications such as the The Economist, The New York Times, Les Echos, Le Figaro, Business Week, The Economic Times India, as well as The Financial Times. INSEAD will also run an extensive online campaign with The Economist, The Financial Times, and Business Week.  Be sure to keep an eye open for print and online ads that will appear in U.S. editions of these publications, including a special spread in the September 14 issue of Business Week, both print and online (with similar spreads to follow in October and November), quarter-page ads in The New York Times on September 21 and October 5, and a quarter-page ad in the Wall Street Journal (tentative) on October 21.  (Note: some regional editions may only be available to subscribers).

More advertisements will run in Asia, the Middle East, and other publications in Europe and the U.S. over the course of the fall. Additionally, a viral advertisement contest has been developed to encourage current MBA students to create online videos that bring the messages of the campaign alive on social networking sites.

Ad campaign strategy and impact will be assessed ongoing so as to make the most appropriate choices for continuation of the campaign in 2010.  For more information on this and other aspects of the year's celebration, please visit the microsite that INSEAD has created for its 50th Anniversary at http://50.insead.edu.

Events in the Americas

Throughout the 50th Anniversary year, INSEAD will host or be showcased through participation by faculty and others at a number of events and meetings throughout the Americas. Among activities already scheduled or being planned for September through November:

  • INSEAD International Alumni Association fall meeting - The presidents of INSEAD's various National Alumni Associations will gather in Montreal from October 1-4 for their semi-annual meeting; this will be the first time a meeting has been held in this part of the world. Alumni hosts in Canada have scheduled their annual fundraising dinner - benefiting the INSEAD Alumni Fund and Fondation Canadienne, which provides scholarships to INSEAD students from Canada - for the same weekend, and have also arranged for INSEAD to be showcased at a luncheon event with the Montreal business community sponsored by C.D. Howe Institute, a prestigious think tank in Canada. INSEAD leadership, including Dean Brown, and faculty member Filipe Santos will be in attendance and attention from the media is expected - invitation only.
  • INSEAD U.S. Council fall meeting - INSEAD's U.S. Council (East Coast) will hold its fall meeting on October 5 in New York City; Jake Cohen, Dean of the MBA Program will join the group as a special guest – invitation only.

    • USA AA Tri-State Chapter event - afternoon of October 18, New York City following the above (tentative)
  • INSEAD faculty appearances - Watch for local announcements.
  • PGA (Programa de Gestão Avançada) CEO Program - Dean Frank Brown and faculty member Lourdes Casanova will help mark the 20th anniversary of FDC /INSEAD-'s customized program with CEO’s in São Paulo, Brazil on October 26. Dean Emerson de Almeida of FDC will be hosting the event. This will be a joint FDC/INSEAD event to celebrate INSEAD’s 50th anniversary in Latin America. Alumni from the Americas in São Paulo at that time are invited to join the event. Please contact Elaine Cristina for invitation details.

Check the INSEAD and USIAA websites for new postings and stay tuned for updates throughout the year.

INSEAD in the News

I hope everyone had a relaxing summer.  While many of us were vacationing, the INSEAD press team kept busy this summer getting placements for the school in the U.S. business press.  Over 15 mentions were garnered in August in top-tier publications including BusinessWeek, Forbes, and the Wall Street Journal.  I found this online article particularly interesting; it is an interview with INSEAD Executive MBA graduate Roberto Lee, about the business he started in Shanghai and INSEAD's role in his success.  Link
below:

CNN.com (Aug 21)  CHINESE CEO SHARES THE SECRET OF HIS SUCCESS

Roberto Lee Jr, 35, is the President of Fresh Bread & Company in Shanghai. He has an MBA from USC Marshall School of Business and an Executive MBA (EMBA) from INSEAD and Tsinghua University in Beijing.

If you would like to share the story of how INSEAD helped to make your business a success, please send your ideas to our agency or me.

Note also the article, L'Insead souffle ses 50 bougies, in the French newspaper, Le Figaro, regarding the 50 years of INSEAD (versione française).

We also appear in the Financial Times (you will need to do a free registration to view the article).

Thanks to Jeannine Athas for these last two articles.

Career Services News

INSEAD CareerLink -- One-Stop Shopping in the Job Market

INSEAD CareerLink, a high quality, online job resource, rich in job board and CV bank, is now fully operational. It is our single source for all career-related services, such as job hunting, posting new job openings, career counseling and seminars.  It is accessible under the umbrella of INSEAD Connect, the latest generation of our World Wide Web, which is also the platform for our USA Alumni Association.

Whether you are a job seeker or as a recruiter, you have free access to CareerLink as long as you are a dues-paying member of INSEAD alumni association, by logging into the USIAA website and clicking INSEAD Career services. Make sure your profile and CV are current.

Alumni who are registered as recruiters will not be charged for posting jobs and downloading contact details. If you can pass this on to your HR contacts that would be instrumental in raising the number of jobs posted. Non-alumni recruiters and headhunters can also register and use CareerLink to post jobs, search profiles and CV’s and save queries on a fee basis.

See my broadcast e-mail of August  28 sent to all alumni in the US for understanding  CareerLink’s  functions and facilities, how  to navigate through it and how recruiters can register.

Wanted… Jobs, Jobs, Jobs

Now more than ever in these truly trying times of global recession, jobs are desperately needed, even by our star alumni, not just in financial services, but in every industry and economic sector.

How can we help?

  • Alumni, reach out and help each other. Do you have any openings in your organization, For-profit or Non-profit where our alumni might fit in? Do you know of anyone hiring elsewhere? Do you know of any openings coming up in the next few weeks or months? Let other alumni know by posting those opportunities on our Web, either directly or by e-mail to me.
  • Chapter Presidents – please appoint career services persons for your regions so that there is someone to focus on this important issue and to help unemployed alumni in the region.
  • Chapters – please organize periodic career-networking events, with or without outside speakers or panelists. These events can not only facilitate exchange of ideas, provide leads, guidance and counsel, but also act as morale boosters.

INSEAD’s newly launched CareerLink is a vast improvement over job search tools previously available to us and should alleviate the pain in the search process. Fellow alumni, if you are not already members of our national association, please join now for only $75 a year, so that you can leverage CareerLink to attain your career goals.

David Martin, MBA, '05J, Co-President, New England Region

If you haven’t been attending the INSEAD New England alumni events recently, you’ve really been missing out.  Our Spring event was a lovely, intimate cheese tasting in the South End, hosted personally by the renowned Ihsan Gurdal, owner of Formaggio Kitchen – the place to go for impossible to find cheeses, the vast majority produced outside the US and about half made available exclusively to Ihsan.  Ishan himself was delightful and just as complex and colorful as his wares, and at our exclusive tasting, he graciously brought abundant samples of some of his best and most rare cheeses, paired with a mouth-watering array of accompanying spreads.

We kick off fall with a Business Breakfast event offered by the French Library of Boston, with a special discount to INSEAD alumni. Register online (login required).

Creative Capital:  Legacy of Georges Doriot and the History of Innovation During a Downturn
Friday, 25 Sep 2009 — 7:30 AM to 9:00 AM
Location: The French Library, 53 Marlborough Street
Price: $20 for INSEAD alumni

Join us for a business breakfast and talk with BusinessWeek’s Spencer Ante, author of Creative Capital.  Mr. Ante will explore the life and legacy of Georges Doriot, a visionary Frenchman who overturned conventional wisdom by proving there is money to be made investing in small and risky businesses - thereby founding modern venture capitalism.

As many of you know, a heat wave came through the Pacific Northwest this summer setting all-time record high temperatures in many cities in the region.  How does 103 degrees in Seattle sound?  Well, it did not stop INSEAD alumni Marco Baissas from inviting fellow alums to his house for a 4th of July BBQ and panoramic view of the Lake Union and the fireworks.

In addition, alumnus Ross Saario organized a July 30th happy hour at Pike's Brewery Pub in Seattle.

Thank you to Marco & Ross.  I'm sure there is more to report so please get in touch with Dustin Hindman to keep the regional calendar of events updated. Also, if you want to get involved with the regional alumni group, then please contact Dustin Hindman.

Great news everyone!

As of September 1st, Caroline Kaufmann, MBA '07J, is taking on the position of USIAA President of the Midwest region.  Caroline has just returned to her native Chicago after two years in Munich working with Siemens Management Consulting.  She is currently working as a senior financial analyst in the performance controlling department at Siemens Building Technologies in Buffalo Grove, leading asset management and enterprise risk management programs.

At INSEAD, Caroline served on the Student Council as the integration representative, a role which included organizing the integration week for the following class as well as the graduation party for her own class.  In addition, Caroline was the fundraising chair and treasurer for Canadian-American Week, and she organized several other activities including a trip to a private island in Indonesia for her P1-P2 section-mates.  Caroline is excited to have this opportunity to help bring together INSEAD alumni in the Midwest for fun and interesting events.

If you have ideas for activities you would like to participate in, or if you would like to help organize, please email Caroline or by phone at +1 224-475-6688.

I will continue to be a regular participant in Midwest activities and continue with my national role facilitating the volunteer group of regional presidents across the country.

Caroline Kaufmann , MBA'07J, Midwest Regional President

On August 12th, the USIAA Midwest chapter hosted an interesting seminar with INSEAD Professor of Marketing David Midgley in Chicago.  A group of about 20 Chicago-area alumni of INSEAD and other top business schools, notified of the event through the recently revived Chicago MBA Alliance, were in attendance.  After an animated cocktail session where attendees got to know one another, David led an interactive discussion about the key points in his new book, The Innovation Manual.  The formal presentation led to numerous follow-up conversations until the last guests reluctantly headed home.

INSEAD is now a full member of the newly-formed Chicago MBA Alliance!
We are excited be a member of this new community of Top MBA Alumni Clubs, which has already brought to our Chicago alumni new events and networking opportunities!

The mission of the Chicago MBA Alliance is to promote communication and interaction among members of the Top MBA Alumni Clubs in the Chicago area through a variety of professional, social, educational, and family activities. As we grow and develop, we hope for your input in continuing to refine and focus our vision.
The Chicago MBA Alliance group is coordinated on LinkedIn where we announce events sponsored by the Alliance or its member Clubs and also provide a space for MBA Alumni from Top Business Schools to socialize and exchange resources.  We encourage INSEAD alumni to connect through this group in order to keep up to speed regarding events and to expand their personal and professional network. The group is available on LinkedIn.

Carol Fedida, Bastille Day event organizer, TriState

On a beautiful sunny Tuesday evening in July, over 60 alumni turned up to celebrate Bastille Day on a gorgeous mid town rooftop.  Amidst French flags flying and the Marseillaise booming out we managed to keep up the spirit of the occasion and 'eat drink and be merry.'

It was a wonderful opportunity to catch up with fellow alumni in a relaxed setting and watch the sunset over the Hudson. We were treated, at the close of the evening, to an opera performance by our very own, talented, Eric Lautier. Thanks to all those who once again made this a great evening.

Make sure not to miss it next year!!
